THE DOH RECORDED OVER 5,700 CASES OF INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESSES IN JANUARY.

The Department of Health reported over 5,000 cases of Influenza-like illness for January 2025.

From January 1 to 18, the agency recorded 5,789 cases, which is 54% lower than the 12,620 cases during the same period last year.

This year, only one death was reported, a significant decrease compared to the 26 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.

The top six causative agents of influenza-like illnesses are Influenza A and B, Rhinovirus, Enterovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and Adenovirus.

The Department of Health (DOH) is advising the public, especially senior citizens, to take necessary precautions, including getting flu vaccinations.

"It’s a natural occurrence when the Amihan season arrives, and flu-like symptoms or flu cases typically rise. We should take care of our bodies as this is common during this season, and we encourage everyone to get vaccinated," said DOH Assistant Secretary for Public Health Services Cluster, Farwa Hombre, during the National Immunization Summit 2025 held on Thursday, January 30.

"Possible po na mas kapitan sila ng sakit. Pwede po silang magkaroon ng flu at maging severe case, na mauwi sa pneumonia na nakamamatay," she added.

The DOH also reminded the public to practice proper handwashing, maintain a healthy diet, and stay hydrated. Additionally, if symptoms appear, individuals should wear a face mask to prevent the spread of the virus.

"Ang influenza po ay isang viral infection, kaya hindi kailangan ng antibiotic. Ang kailangan natin ay prevention, at kung maaari, magpabakuna," emphasized DOH National Immunization Program Manager Dr. Janis Bunoan-Macazo.

Meanwhile, 10,842 cases of dengue were reported this month, which is an 8% decrease from the 11,781 cases recorded during the same period in 2024.

There were also 21 reported deaths, marking a 50% decrease from the 42 deaths reported last year.
