On Thursday, the House Committee on Labor and Employment approved a P200 across-the-board daily wage increase for private sector workers, following an agreement between congressmen and labor organizations on the proposed rate.
The approval, which was unanimous among the 10 members of the committee, came after Speaker Martin Romualdez announced that a consensus of a P200 daily minimum wage was reached by House leaders and labor groups during a meeting at the Batasan Pambansa on Tuesday.
House Deputy Speaker and TUCP Partylist Rep. Democrito Raymond Mendoza, one of the measure's authors, stated that the wage increase would help lift around 5 million minimum wage earners out of poverty.
"Tama na, sobra na (Enough is enough). Let's end poverty wages," Mendoza said.
"Let us make history together and pass this law after 36 years," Mendoza added, The most recent legislated wage increase, which was enacted in 1989, has remained in effect until now, making the newly approved P200 daily wage hike a notable step forward for private sector workers.
